B-Series Melters
MIFCO manufactures some of the most versatile Melting Furnaces available. The wide temperature range will allow the melting of most non-ferrous metals used in casting and some grey iron up to class 30 or 35. All of these units have a temperature range of 1200° to 2400° F and are designed to melt as rapidly as possible. In the school shop or industrial foundry, these units have an immediate and profitable application. They cover nearly the entire range of modern melting needs. The initial investment for this type of industrial equipment is nominal and the maintenance is held to an absolute minimum due to the rugged construction and high quality of the furnace lining.

B-Series General Specifications

FLEXIBILITY, VERSATILITY and ECONOMY:

RUGGED, WELDED STEEL CONSTRUCTION:

The outer shells of MIFCO furnaces are heavy gauge steel, reinforced where necessary, with rolled steel bars and welded throughout. The rugged construction conforms to the highest industrial standards. The lid support rings are also constructed of heavy gauge rolled steel bars. The furnace lids are recessed in sectional cast chrome-iron protection plates. The lid derrick is simple in design and sturdily constructed with a detachable handle to prevent overheating. Structural steel legs provide air circulation beneath the unit to prevent overheating of the foundry floor. The low operating height provides greater convenience for charging of the crucible. Each unit is provided with an overflow and drain hole in the base of the furnace.

SECTIONAL REFRACTORY LINING:

Super-duty, high alumina, hand-made, air rammed and pre-fired refractory shapes are used in the lining and dome shaped lids of all MIFCO High Speed Melters. The rapid melting schedules and capacity to melt grey iron make it mandatory that we use the best refractory material available to insure long life of the furnace lining. Super-duty high alumina can withstand the drastic temperature changes due to rapid heating and can operate at temperatures in excess of 3000° F without spalling or deterioration. Sectional linings facilitate movement during heating to prevent thermal cracking and deterioration of the lining and lid. Field replacement of the linings and lids is rapid and easy. Refractory relining kits are available for all MIFCO furnaces.

HIGH TEMPERATURE INSULATION:

High temperature castable insulation between the steel shell and the combustion chamber lining combine high strength and excellent insulating properties. This provides faster heating, lower heat loss and greater burner efficiency.

BURNER SYSTEM:

The MIFCO gas-air mixer will utilize any type of fuel gas - natural, bottled or tank. The venturi design of the aspirator mixer develops a slight suction against the main gas line, eliminating the need for check valves. The standard mixer system is a manual two-valve control which permits the operator to set any type of flame or atmospheric characteristics desired. Both the gas and air valves are conveniently located. The type of fuel gas can be changed as desired without having to change an orifice or jet on the mixer. Each furnace is shipped complete with a blower. It is only necessary to make gas and electrical connections and the furnace is ready to operate.

COMBUSTION SAFEGUARD SYSTEM:

Combustion safeguard systems are standard equipment on all MIFCO furnaces. The burner control is an industrial type, electronic unit activated by a flame sensor that detects the ultra-violet spectrum of the burner flame. Response to a flame failure of any kind is within 2 to 4 seconds and flame monitoring is continuous. The burner system is ignited by a timed electronic spark. In the event of a flame failure, reset of the burner control is manual.

A modern designed forge, offered in 3 sizes to meet the requirements of the General Shop, Vocational and Agricultural School Shops, or, Blacksmith, Industrial, and Farm Maintenance Shops. The Flat Hearth Slot Forge is particularly adapted for tool dressing and sharpening, general forging, bending, and welding operations. Work is always visible to the operator, thus preventing burning and wasting of materials.

The forge is constructed of heavy gauge steel, structurally reinforced and electric welded. The reflector baffle is made of steel angle and bar to resist sagging and bending. The reflector elevating screw provides easy, positive adjustment. Like all Speedy Forge Furnaces, the complete firebox and hearth area is lined with High Alumina Fire Brick to give extra service life. High temperature castable insulation between the fire brick and the furnace shell provides faster heating, greater fuel efficiency, and simplifies the relining of the furnace. The reflector baffle lining is composed of standard 9 in. and 13 in. insulating fire bricks. An adjustable work support rack is also standard equipment.

The Gas/Air Mixer operates efficiently with either natural or propane fuel. The standard mixer is a two valve, manual control type which permits the operator to adjust the flame to any characteristics desired. Combustion Safeguard Systems with spark ignition and continual flame monitoring are standard equipment on all forging furnaces.

For Safety's Sake

One of the greatest hazards in foundry work is the danger of dropping a crucible of molten metal. The MIFCO Safety Shank was developed by our engineers at the request of school administrators, to help eliminate this hazard. It is simple in design, yet easy to operate, and holds the crucible securely. This prevents the accidental dropping and dumping of a crucible of molten metal. The Safety Design has been tested thoroughly in school shops and commercial foundries, where safety regulations specify its use. It is available in both the Hand Shank and the two-man Single End Shank.

Crucible Shanks

Crucible shanks are foundry tools used to hold the crucible of molten metal while pouring the molds. Shanks are made in two standard designs - the one man Hand Shank and the two-man Single End Shank.

  • Crucible rings are die formed to shape and size, insuring correct fit at point below bilge diameter of crucible.
  • Supporting pads placed inside ring for four-point suspension. Design provides air space between crucible and ring. This prevents heat transfer from crucible to band and adds to the service life of crucible and shank.
  • All Single End shanks are offset to provide better balance of the crucible when pouring.
  • Tubular handles for light weight and strength. Handle length and tubing size varies with size shank.
  • Crucible shank bails available for handling large crucible with hoist and trolley.

Using these basic design features, MIFCO developed and added the spring loaded latch as a locking device for the Safety Series.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES OF THE SAFETY SHANKS ARE:

Adequately Held - The spring-loaded locking device holds the crucible so securely in place, it can be completely inverted while pouring. Larger sizes are equipped with double locks.

Simple in Design - Simplicity of design insures positive action and dependable operation.

Easy to Use - The locking arms swing clear of the shank ring and in no way impedes the loading of the crucible. The latch handle is conveniently located on the shank handle.

More Efficient - Entire contents of the crucible can be poured without the risk of dropping the crucible.

Labor Saving - Eliminates need for additional help to hold crucible in shank ring while pouring.

SAFETY SINGLE CRUCIBLE SHANKS

THE SAFETY LOCK SHANK was developed to prevent the accidental dropping of a crucible of hot metal. It is highly recommended for school shop use.

THE ADJUSTABLE SAFETY LOCK SHANK is furnished on single end shanks only. Each size shank can be adjusted to fit two sizes of clay graphite or silicon carbide crucibles. Adjustable support pads placed inside shank band provides three to four point suspension. Positive adjustment is easily and quickly made. Loosen lock nuts, move pads to desired position, then tighten lock nuts.
